How the Sun sees you /// Sun Protection

Recently,
there was a video that was going around about the importance of sunscreen & sun protection.
I didn't bother to watch it when a friend posted it on Facebook,
till a good friend of mine urged me to watch it.

Surprisingly, it is not the usual
"You must wear sunscreen else you will get skin cancer" kind of information shared.
Instead,
the video showed us the exact effects of not wearing sunscreen right on the spot,
using a UV camera.
Freckles, spots, lines & wrinkles, that were not visible to the eye, could be detected by the camera.
The video that spanned just 3 minutes, really impacted me.
& so I decided to share the video with my readers & to also include some other facts that we might have neglected.
How the Sun sees you by Brooklyn filmmaker, Thomas Leveritt.
Take 3 minutes to watch this video, and it will change your mind about not applying sunblock,
or having the basic sun protection.

Sunscreen is your best option when it comes to protecting your skin from the harmful UV rays.
Frequent application of sunscreen can decrease your risks of skin cancers, and also skin diseases like melanomas.
Some people believe that sunscreen is only needed when you are out on the beach.
However, sunscreen is not an accessory to prevent you from burning online when you tan.
Since the sun is out 365 days a year, why should you only apply sunscreen in the Summer,
OR when you are out tanning?

Here are some interesting facts!

Do you know what does SPF mean?
Or what do the numbers after the SPF signifies?
& what are the differences between UVA & UVB rays?

1. SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor.

2. The numbers behind it are SPF ratings that could start from 2 to 70.
They measure a sunscreen's effect against UVB rays and the amount of time you can be in the sun before burning.

For example, you burn after ten minutes of sun exposure without any cream,
an SPF of 15 will allow you to stay in the sun for up to 150 minutes without burning.
So, the higher the SPF number, the more sunburn protection the cream provides.

 3. UVA has a longer wavelength, travels through glass and damages collagen, speeding up the ageing process.
On the other hand, UVB is shorter, penetrates only through to the epidermis, and causes sunburn and cancerous changes.

********************************************************************************
Skin damage from sunlight builds up with continued exposure, regardless of whether or not sunburn occurs.
Many people believe that if they stay indoors, they will not be exposed to the Sun.
This is wrong as UVA rays can penetrate windows & glass.
So even if you are indoors, it is advisable to slap on some Sunscreen.

& according to research, the Sun's rays are strongest from 10am to 4pm,
and a minimum of SPF 40 would be perfect for everyday.

The amount of sunscreens I own..

Most are gifts from friends, family & some given to me by companies.

Here are some products that I would recommend for the everyday sun protection.

 1. Shiseido Senka Sunscreen

I am personally using this range of sunscreens.
The first one I bought was the blue one, and I was then given by Shiseido the newly launched yellow one which has Q10 ingredient, which helps in anti-aging.
This product is super lightweight,
& can be applied before makeup without causing any heaviness on the skin.
Suitable for everyday use, even if makeup is applied on top of it.

Purchase it from: Watsons, Guardians.

2. Enavose Invisible Sunbrella UV Mist

I was recently introduced to this by my lovely beauty bloggers,
Vinna (@vinvola) & Qiyun (@qiyunz),
when we went for the Yacht trip for NARS Adult Swim event at One Degree 15.
What I felt was so amazing about this product was the fact that it came in a mist.
That means, the product can be easily reapplied without disturbing or smudging our makeup.
Which is a definite plus point for someone like me!
& what more, it packs a SPF 45 which simply means I will be protected from the Sun for 450 minutes,
which amounts to 7.5 hours.
Enough for the everyday office ladies etc.

Purchase it from: LUXOLA SG

3. Biore Sunscreen range

I also have the Biore in a very small sample travel size which makes it convenient for me to bring it around with me, everywhere I go.
For a more affordable option, you can get Biore.

Purchase it from: Watsons, Guardians

4. Clarins UV Plus HP

For those who do not put makeup on an everyday basis, can try out tinted sunblocks.
They give not only sun protection but also light coverage, suitable for the everyday.

Purchase from: Clarins

Another option for tinted sunblocks would be...

5. Laroche Posay Anthelios range

I bought this range for my Mum in a value pack when I was in Paris as Laroche Posay is a French brand and therefore cheaper there.
But you can easily get it in Singapore too.

Purchase from: Guardians

Humans have developed the various technologies to protect ourselves from the harmful effects of the Sun.
So, why ain't we making full use of it?

Slap on some sunblock today, & every other day!!!

Cmon', don't be lazy.. We have only one set of skin.
Once damaged, there's no turning back time.

xoxo
